Hyderabad based CCMB Scientist K. Thangaraj Conferred Padma Shri

Hyderabad, June 23 (TNT): Eminent geneticist Dr. Kumarasamy Thangaraj, a CSIR Bhatnagar Fellow at the CSIR-Centre for Cellular and Molecular Biology (CCMB), Hyderabad, was conferred the Padma Shri by President Droupadi Murmu at the Civil Investiture Ceremony-II held at Rashtrapati Bhavan on Tuesday.

Dr. Thangaraj has been recognised for his pioneering contributions to human genetics and population studies, which have significantly advanced the understanding of the ancestry, migration patterns and genetic diversity of Indian populations.

Over a career spanning more than three decades at CSIR-CCMB, he has conducted extensive genetic research tracing the origins and interconnections of diverse communities across the Indian subcontinent.

His studies have provided insights into the ancestry of populations such as the Sindhis, Coorgis, Ladakhis and Nicobarese, while also shedding light on historical mysteries associated with Roopkund Lake and the ancient port city of Muziris.

His research has highlighted how populations from Africa, Europe and various parts of Asia migrated to and integrated within the Indian subcontinent over centuries, contributing to its rich cultural and genetic diversity.

Dr. Thangaraj has also made significant contributions to medical genetics by identifying disease-causing genetic mutations prevalent in different Indian sub-populations.

He has consistently advocated genetic screening and testing for rare genetic disorders in the country.

He played a key leadership role in the Department of Biotechnology’s Genome India Initiative, a landmark programme aimed at documenting the genetic profiles of India’s diverse populations and laying the foundation for personalised medicine in the country.

Congratulating the scientist on the prestigious honour, CSIR-CCMB Director Dr. Vinay K. Nandicoori said Dr. Thangaraj’s work has helped the nation better understand its history and strengthen the prospects for future healthcare advancements.
