Hyd: NFC Supplies Steam Generator Tubes in Record 81-Days for India’s Nuclear Power Programme

Hyderabad, Sept 29 (TNT): The Nuclear Fuel Complex (NFC), a unit of the Department of Atomic Energy, has manufactured and supplied a set of steam generator tubes in a record 81 days for India’s fleet-mode 700 MWe Pressurised Heavy Water Reactor (PHWR) programme.

The 12th set of tubes was supplied to the Nuclear Power Corporation of India Limited (NPCIL) on September 28, reducing the manufacturing cycle from the initial 180 days through improvements in productivity, material recovery and quality, the NFC said in a release on Tuesday.

The tubes, which were previously imported, are now manufactured indigenously by NFC, which has emerged as the sole supplier of these critical components for India’s domestic nuclear applications.

With the latest consignment, NFC has completed the supply of steam generator tubes for three of the 10 reactors sanctioned under the fleet-mode programme.

The organisation has so far supplied approximately 58,000 tubes for 23 steam generators for India’s civil nuclear power programme, including reactors outside the fleet-mode initiative.

The consignment was flagged off by Praveen Bhatt, Vice-President and Head of Nuclear Business, Heavy Engineering Division, Larsen & Toubro (L&T), in the presence of NFC Chairman and Chief Executive Komal Kapoor.

Bhatt congratulated the NFC team and appreciated its efforts in ensuring timely supplies of critical components while maintaining the stringent quality standards required for nuclear applications.

He expressed confidence in continued collaboration between L&T and NFC to meet future requirements.

Kapoor said NFC was undertaking challenging assignments involving the development and manufacture of critical and strategic products of national importance, meeting stringent specifications and international quality standards. He reiterated the organisation’s commitment to supporting India’s nuclear power programme through indigenous manufacturing and technological advancement.

The achievement is expected to support India’s efforts to strengthen domestic manufacturing capabilities and achieve the national target of 100 GW of nuclear power capacity by 2047.
