Hyd: AINU Doctors Remove Pumpkin-Sized Kidney Tumor from 53-Year-Old Man

Hyderabad, May 24 (TNT): Doctors at Asian Institute of Nephrology and Urology (AINU) Hospitals, Banjara Hills, on Sunday said  they had successfully removed a massive 20 cm kidney tumor from a 53-year-old man in a complex life-saving surgery.

The multidisciplinary surgical team was led by Purna Chandra Reddy and Rajesh Kumar Reddy Adapala from the Centre for Uro-Oncology at AINU.

The patient, a resident of Kurnool district, was admitted with abdominal swelling, weakness and loss of appetite. Medical examination revealed a huge abdominal mass originating from the right kidney, the Institute said in a release here.

According to doctors, the tumor had grown to such an extent that it occupied almost the entire right side of the abdominal cavity and displaced the intestines towards the opposite side.

As the patient was initially not stable enough to undergo prolonged surgery and anesthesia, doctors first stabilised him with intravenous fluids, antibiotics and blood transfusions due to low haemoglobin levels.

After optimisation, the patient underwent an open radical nephrectomy under general anesthesia. During surgery, doctors found a massive bleeding tumor replacing the entire kidney and pushing surrounding organs including the intestines, pancreas and liver.

The surgical team carefully dissected and removed the tumor without damaging nearby vital structures. Doctors said the removed specimen measured nearly 20 cm and resembled the size of a pumpkin.

Post-surgery, the patient recovered without major complications. Microscopic examination later confirmed the tumor to be Renal Cell Carcinoma, a type of kidney cancer. Doctors said the surgical margins were clear, indicating complete removal of the cancerous growth.

Speaking about the procedure, Dr Purna Chandra Reddy said managing such a massive kidney tumor required meticulous planning and advanced surgical precision.

He stressed the importance of early detection and advised people not to ignore ultrasound scans during routine health check-ups, as they play a crucial role in detecting tumors at an early stage.

Dr Rajesh Kumar Reddy Adapala described the case as exceptionally complex due to the tumor’s size and location and said the successful outcome reflected advancements in surgical expertise and uro-oncology care.

The doctors also cautioned that urological cancers are increasing globally and highlighted that AINU is equipped with advanced robotic and laparoscopic surgical facilities, enabling minimally invasive keyhole procedures for early-stage cancers.
