Hyd: AI, Advanced Technology to Enhance Cancer Care: Experts
Hyderabad, Sept 26 (TNT): Artificial intelligence (AI), advanced technology and medical physics are playing an increasingly important role in cancer diagnosis and treatment, experts said at a two-day conference organised by the Department of Radiation Oncology, KIMS Hospitals, Secunderabad, which concluded on Sunday.
The annual conference of the Association of Medical Physicists of India (AMPI), Telangana and Andhra Pradesh Chapter, brought together medical physicists, radiation oncologists, radiologists and healthcare technology professionals from the two states to discuss advances in cancer care.
Osmania University Vice-Chancellor Prof. M. Kumar, who attended the conference as the chief guest, stressed the need to integrate advanced physics, AI and public health infrastructure to develop accessible and precision-driven healthcare systems.
He said digital technologies would play a significant role in cancer treatment and advanced medical diagnostics, adding that stronger digital healthcare infrastructure would help improve access to modern medical services.
The conference featured discussions on radiation dosimetry, nuclear medicine, radiation safety and advanced cancer treatment techniques, with a focus on accurate radiation dose delivery, patient safety and the integration of emerging technologies into clinical practice.
KIMS Group of Hospitals CMD Dr. B. Bhaskar Rao said the hospital had advanced technological infrastructure and specialist teams to provide comprehensive treatment for various types of cancer.
The group was expanding its capabilities to strengthen advanced and affordable healthcare in India, he said.
He urged medical physicists to update their knowledge continuously and familiarise themselves with emerging technologies, including generative AI in diagnostic imaging and radiation oncology.
Combining technology with clinical expertise could improve precision and efficiency in cancer treatment, he added.
Prof. M. Kumar Molugaram said the Department of Radiation Oncology at KIMS Hospitals, Secunderabad, was a recognised research centre of Osmania University.
The university had signed a memorandum of understanding with KIMS to offer a Post-M.Sc. Diploma course in Medical Physics, he said.
Osmania University would extend support to future training and research programmes aimed at strengthening the skills and knowledge of medical physicists, he added.
KIMS Hospitals Medical Director Dr. Sambit Sahu, Chief Medical Physicist and Radiation Safety Officer Dr. K. Krishna Murthy, Senior Medical Physicist Dr. PBLD Prasad and other medical physicists, radiation oncologists and healthcare professionals attended the conference.
