ECI Announces Elections to 27 Rajya Sabha Seats, Filing of Nominations Begins

New Delhi, June 1(TNT): The Election Commission of India (ECI) on Monday announced elections to 27 seats in the Council of States (Rajya Sabha), including biennial elections and bye-elections, besides elections to State Legislative Councils in Bihar and Karnataka.

According to an ECI press note, the elections include biennial polls to 24 Rajya Sabha seats across 10 states and bye-elections to one seat each in Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu and Odisha.

Elections to State Legislative Councils by Members of Legislative Assemblies (MLAs) will also be held for nine seats in Bihar and seven seats in Karnataka, along with a bye-election to one Legislative Council seat in Bihar.

The 24 Rajya Sabha seats falling vacant are from Andhra Pradesh, Gujarat, Jharkhand, Madhya Pradesh, Manipur, Meghalaya, Rajasthan, Arunachal Pradesh, Karnataka and Mizoram.

The Commission has issued notifications for the election programme and appointed Returning Officers and Assistant Returning Officers for both biennial and bye-elections.

Details of the appointments have been published in the Gazette of India and respective State Gazettes.

The filing of nominations commenced at 11 a.m. on June 1 and will continue until June 8, with nominations to be accepted up to 3 p.m. on the last day.

Scrutiny of nominations will be undertaken on June 9, while June 11 has been fixed as the last date for withdrawal of candidature.

In the event of a contest, polling will be held on June 18 from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., followed by counting of votes at 5 p.m. on the same day.

The elections will determine representation in the Rajya Sabha and the Legislative Councils of the concerned states as members complete their terms or vacancies arise.
