Dhanteras gold sales estimated at Rs 60,000 crore across India: GJC

Mumbai, Nov 6 (TNT): Gold sales across India on the occasion of Dhanteras are estimated at around Rs 60,000 crore, registering an anticipated growth of 15-20 per cent in value terms compared to previous year, All India Gem and Jewellery Domestic Council (GJC) Chairman Rajesh Rokde said on Friday.

While gold sales by volume are expected to remain almost at last year’s level, the increase in value terms reflects the positive momentum in the jewellery industry, he said in a statement.

Jewellery stores across the country opened as early as 8 am on Dhanteras and witnessed strong customer turnout, Rajesh said, describing the festival as an encouraging beginning for the industry.

He attributed the positive consumer response to the cultural and religious significance of Dhanteras, favourable festive timing and improved market liquidity following salary and bonus payments at the beginning of the month.

Dhanteras, observed on November 6 this year, is considered an auspicious occasion for purchasing gold and other valuables. Diwali falls on November 8.

Relatively lower gold prices over the past four to six months have also supported consumer interest, he said.

Referring to the price movement, Rajesh said gold was priced at around Rs 60,000 per 10 grams in 2023, rising to Rs 80,000 in 2024 and Rs 1.15 lakh to Rs 1.20 lakh in 2025.

It is currently trading at approximately Rs 1.42 lakh per 10 grams, he added.

He said the appreciation in gold prices had strengthened its appeal as an investment asset, while silver had also recorded significant gains.

Expressing optimism about the industry’s prospects, he said the upcoming wedding season following the festive period was expected to provide further business opportunities.

He thanked customers across the country for their continued trust and support, saying the positive response had brought renewed momentum to the jewellery industry.
