Amgen to establish Science and Innovation Centre at Hyderabad’s Genome Valley
Hyderabad, Aug 11 (TNT): US-based biotechnology company Amgen on Tuesday announced plans to establish a Science and Innovation Centre at Genome Valley here, further strengthening Telangana’s position as a global hub for life sciences research and innovation.
The centre is expected to become operational in 2027 and will bring together scientists and technologists working in discovery chemistry, drug metabolism and pharmacokinetics, and precision medicine, the company said.
Amgen India signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Telangana government in the presence of IT and Industries Minister D Sridhar Babu at the Secretariat here.
Amgen India Managing Director Naveen Gullapalli and Telangana Industries Special Secretary Krishna Aditya exchanged the MoU documents.
Earlier, an Amgen India delegation met Sridhar Babu and discussed the company’s plans to expand its operations in Hyderabad and deepen its engagement with the state’s life sciences ecosystem.
Welcoming the development, Sridhar Babu said the proposed centre would create employment opportunities for highly skilled professionals and further strengthen Hyderabad’s position as a global destination for advanced life sciences research.
Amgen operates across around 100 countries and regions and develops therapies for diseases including cancer, cardiovascular conditions, bone disorders, inflammation, respiratory diseases and rare diseases.
The Minister said Amgen had recently established a Global Capability Centre (GCC) in Hyderabad with around 3,000 employees, reflecting the company’s confidence in the city’s talent pool, infrastructure and life sciences ecosystem.
“The continued expansion of global pharmaceutical and biotechnology leaders in Telangana is a matter of great pride for our government. It reflects the growing confidence of global companies in our state’s talent, infrastructure and innovation ecosystem,” Sridhar Babu said.
He said Telangana was emerging as a preferred destination for global life sciences companies, supported by research capabilities, skilled workforce, infrastructure and the established ecosystem at Genome Valley.
The Minister urged Amgen to give priority to local youth and talent from Telangana while recruiting for the proposed research centre so that young professionals could benefit from the high-value employment opportunities generated by the growing life sciences sector.
Amgen Executive Vice President of Research and Development, Artificial Intelligence and Data Jay Bradner said the new centre would expand the integration of experimental science with data and technology across the company’s global research capabilities.
Amgen Senior Vice President of Global Business Solutions and National Executive Som Chattopadhyay said India would be an important part of the company’s global R&D network.
“By expanding Amgen’s global research capabilities through its Hyderabad site, we are enabling deep scientific collaboration and look forward to participating in the local innovation ecosystem,” he said.
Amgen India Managing Director Naveen Gullapalli said Hyderabad’s life sciences ecosystem and STEM expertise would enable the company to apply advanced technologies at scale.
“Our new centre at Genome Valley will help integrate biotechnology and digital innovation to serve more patients globally,” he said.
Amgen has a global R&D network comprising seven research laboratories and develops medicines for cancer, cardiovascular and inflammatory conditions, rare diseases and obesity-related conditions.
