Hyderabad, Feb 11 (TNT) : The Indian Journalists Union (IJU) has extended its support to the nationwide general strike called by central trade unions and associations against the four Labour Codes enacted by the Union Government.
In a statement, IJU President K. Sreenivas Reddy and Secretary-General Balwinder Singh Jammu expressed serious concern over the replacement of 29 existing labour laws, including the Working Journalists Act, with the four Labour Codes.
They said the move has weakened statutory protections for workers across sectors, including media professionals.
The IJU alleged that the new Labour Codes dilute hard-won labour rights, undermine collective bargaining, and adversely affect job security and social security benefits for employees.
The union strongly condemned the abolition of the Working Journalists and Other Newspaper Employees (Conditions of Service) and Miscellaneous Provisions Act and the dismantling of the Wage Board mechanism, describing them as critical safeguards for wages, service conditions, and professional rights of journalists and non-journalist newspaper employees.
Demanding immediate corrective action, the IJU leadership called upon the Union Government to reinstate the Working Journalists Act and restore the Wage Board system to ensure fair wages and statutory protection for media workers.
Reiterating solidarity with the working class nationwide, the IJU urged the government to initiate meaningful dialogue with trade unions and announced that all IJU-affiliated state unions have been asked to actively participate in the programmes organised by national trade unions on February 12.
