Hyderabad police bust interstate Ganja syndicate using postal network; kingpin held

Hyderabad, July 2 (TNT): The Hyderabad Narcotics Enforcement Wing (H-NEW) has busted an interstate ganja trafficking syndicate that allegedly distributed cannabis across nearly 21 states using Speed Post and courier services, arresting its key mastermind and exposing what police described as a major security lapse in the postal delivery system.

Addressing a press conference here on Thursday, Hyderabad Commissioner of Police V.C. Sajjanar said Satyam Misra, a native of Giridih district in Jharkhand, was arrested for allegedly operating the network.

Four other accused, including his elder brother Shubham Misra alias Shubham Dada, Sachin Misra (Mumbai network coordinator), Rahul Jha alias Chote Misra (parcel booking and dispatch agent) and Santosh Pandit (Mumbai network coordinator), are absconding.

According to police, Satyam, who had discontinued his education due to financial difficulties, initially worked as a painter and commercial vehicle driver before entering the narcotics trade in 2018.

Along with his brother and associates, he allegedly built an organised network that cultivated and sourced ganja in Jharkhand before supplying it to customers across major cities including Hyderabad, Mumbai, Chennai, Delhi and Bengaluru.

Police said the syndicate used Isri Bazar and Phusro Bazar post offices in Jharkhand to dispatch parcels, falsely declaring them as medicines while booking them through Speed Post. Orders were received through WhatsApp and other social media platforms, while payments were collected through multiple UPI accounts, said Sajjanar.

The gang executed around 80 to 100 orders daily, dispatching 8 to 10 parcels every day, with each package containing 50 to 250 grams of ganja.

The contraband was allegedly sold for ₹1,500 to ₹8,000 per order, generating an estimated ₹1 lakh per day, or nearly ₹30–35 lakh per month, with an annual turnover of around ₹4–5 crore, the Police Commissioner said.

The syndicate also maintained a separate network in Mumbai with over 1,000 regular customers.

Bulk quantities of ganja were allegedly transported by train from Jharkhand to Mumbai, where local associates repackaged and delivered the narcotics using local trains and auto-rickshaws.

The gang reportedly used coded terms such as “Mango”, “Stick” and “Flower” while communicating quantities of ganja to evade detection.

The racket came to light after H-NEW intercepted a parcel booked from Jharkhand for delivery in Hyderabad.

Investigation led to the arrest of two local buyers, Sushanth Vyas and Laddu, and the seizure of 2 kg of ganja. Separate cases have been registered at Gudimalkapur and S.R. Nagar police stations.

During the investigation, police found that the parcels had travelled through rail and air networks without undergoing scanning.

Sajjanar said Hyderabad Police would write to the concerned central authorities seeking mandatory screening of postal parcels transported by train and aircraft to plug the security loophole.

Police also alleged that the accused laundered proceeds through multiple bank accounts and UPI IDs, including an account in the name of Satyam Misra’s mother, before investing the money in gold and luxury vehicles.

Following the case, Hyderabad Police has directed courier agencies in the city to mandatorily scan all parcels before dispatch and delivery.

The public has been advised to immediately report suspicious or unsolicited parcels to Dial 100 or the H-NEW helpline.

Sajjanar commended the 22-member H-NEW team led by DCP Gaikwad Vaibhav Raghunath for successfully dismantling the interstate drug trafficking network.
