Dr. NTR UHS Celebrates National Doctors’ Day; B.C. Roy Statue Unveiled
Vijayawada, July 1 (TNT): Dr. NTR University of Health Sciences (Dr. NTR UHS) on Wednesday celebrated National Doctors’ Day 2026 at its university auditorium with the theme “Dedication, Service, and Excellence in Healthcare”, marking the occasion with the unveiling of a bust of eminent physician-statesman Dr. Bidhan Chandra Roy.
The event was attended by Principal Secretary, Health, Medical & Family Welfare, S. Suresh Kumar, as Chief Guest, and High Power Committee Chairman Justice U. Durga Prasad as Guest of Honour. Vice-Chancellor Dr. P. Chandra Sekhar and Registrar Dr. T. Sai Sudheer were also present.
As part of the celebrations, ten distinguished doctors from across Andhra Pradesh were felicitated with the “Best Doctor Award – 2026” for their contribution to medical education and healthcare services across multiple disciplines, including allopathy, Ayurveda, Homeopathy, Unani, dentistry, and nursing.
A major highlight of the event was the unveiling of a bust of Dr. B.C. Roy, former West Bengal Chief Minister, physician, and Bharat Ratna awardee.
The statue was donated by Dr. Indla Rama Subba Reddy and Dr. Indla Vishal.
Speakers described Dr. Roy as a physician-statesman whose legacy reflects the deep social impact of the medical profession.
In his address, Principal Secretary S. Suresh Kumar highlighted the evolving role of doctors in the era of AI, genomics, robotics, and telemedicine, noting that while technology supports diagnosis and treatment, it cannot replace clinical judgment and human empathy.
He also outlined the State Government’s initiatives including Sanjeevani programme and Swarna Andhra 2047 vision, urging senior doctors to mentor younger professionals.
Vice-Chancellor Dr. P. Chandra Sekhar said the university introduced National Doctors’ Day celebrations to recognise the service of doctors and emphasized that healthcare professionals must also prioritise their own well-being while serving society.
Guest of Honour Justice U. Durga Prasad praised the medical profession as one of the most service-oriented fields, noting that even court schedules are often adjusted to accommodate doctors in recognition of their responsibilities.
