Uber Introduces In-App Video Recording, Ambulance Assistance to Enhance Rider Safety

New Delhi, June 30 (TNT): Uber on Tuesday announced a set of new safety features, including an industry-first in-app encrypted video recording system for drivers and an ambulance assistance service, aimed at enhancing safety for both riders and drivers.

The company introduced ‘Record My Ride’, a feature that allows drivers to securely record encrypted in-cab video using their smartphones through the Uber app if they feel unsafe during a trip.

The recordings remain encrypted and inaccessible to both the driver and Uber unless the driver chooses to submit them as part of a safety report, ensuring compliance with applicable privacy laws.

Uber has also partnered with Dial 4242 to launch ‘Ambulance Assistance’, enabling riders and drivers to quickly request medical support following an accident during a trip. The service has been integrated into Uber’s existing 24×7 Safety Line.

Another new feature, ‘Don’t Type & Drive’, disables manual typing in the Uber Driver app while a vehicle is in motion, encouraging drivers to stop safely before responding to messages.

The company has also rolled out ‘Set Your Own PIN’, allowing riders to create and manage their own trip verification PINs for added security during rides.

Speaking on the initiative,  Union Minister for Ministry of Road Transport & Highways, Shri Nitin Gadkari, said adherence to traffic rules, including the use of seat belts and helmets, plays a crucial role in reducing road fatalities.

He said technology could significantly improve road safety and appreciated Uber’s partnership with the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways under the Sadak Suraksha Abhiyaan for promoting safer road behaviour and emergency support.

Sooraj Nair , Head – Safety Operations, Uber India & South Asia, said  safety innovations should become the industry’s baseline rather than remain a point of differentiation.

“Our belief is simple: safety innovation should become the industry’s baseline, not remain a differentiator. Our industry-first safety features and partnerships highlight our commitment to continually raise the bar,” he said.

Uber said the new launches build on its existing suite of safety features, including Audio Recording, Women Rider Preference, Helmet Selfie Verification, Seatbelt Reminders, RideCheck, 24×7 Safety Line, Safety Preferences, and phone and address anonymisation.

The company said it would continue investing in technology, partnerships and awareness programmes to strengthen safety and accountability across its platform.
