HMWSSB Opens Himayat Sagar Floodgates, Releases 1,000 Cusecs of Surplus Water
Hyderabad, June 28 (TNT): The Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (HMWSSB) on Sunday opened the floodgates of Himayat Sagar reservoir and released 1,000 cusecs of surplus water following a rise in inflows from upstream catchment areas due to heavy rainfall.
This is the first time during the current monsoon season that the floodgates of Himayat Sagar have been opened.
In a statement, HMWSSB said inflows into the reservoir had increased due to rains in the catchment area, necessitating the release of surplus water to regulate the reservoir’s storage level.
The water board said inflows into the reservoir are being monitored continuously and the quantum of water discharge will be regulated depending on the inflow situation.
Following the release of water downstream, HMWSSB Managing Director K. Ashok Reddy alerted the Hyderabad Disaster Response and Asset Protection Agency (HYDRAA), Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC), district administrations of Hyderabad and Ranga Reddy, and the police department to remain on alert as a precautionary measure.
HMWSSB currently draws drinking water for Hyderabad from both Osman Sagar and Himayat Sagar reservoirs to meet the city’s water requirements.
