Veteran Tamil  filmmaker K. Bhagyaraj passes away at 73

Chennai, June 27 (TNT) Veteran Tamil filmmaker, actor, screenwriter and producer K. Bhagyaraj passed away in Chennai on Saturday following a cardiac arrest. He was 73.

He is survived by his wife, actor Poornima Bhagyaraj, daughter Saranya and son, actor Shanthnu Bhagyaraj.

Born on January 7, 1953, at Vellankoil near Gobichettipalayam in Tamil Nadu’s Erode district, Bhagyaraj emerged as one of the most influential filmmakers in Tamil cinema.

Besides directing and writing several successful Tamil films, he also helmed Hindi remakes of his own movies and worked in television.

Bhagyaraj made his directorial debut with Suvarilladha Chiththirangal in 1979 and went on to deliver a string of acclaimed films, including Mouna Geethangal (1981), Andha 7 Naatkal (1981), Darling, Darling, Darling (1982), Mundhanai Mudichu (1983) and Chinna Veedu (1985).

Over a career spanning more than four decades, Bhagyaraj acted in over 75 films and directed more than 25. He won the Filmfare Award for Best Actor for Mundhanai Mudichu and was honoured with the SIIMA Lifetime Achievement Award in 2014.

Apart from films, Bhagyaraj was the editor of the weekly magazine Bhagya and authored several novels.
