India’s Defence Production Reaches Record Rs 1.78 Lakh Crore in FY26
New Delhi, June 17 (TNT): India’s defence production touched a record Rs 1.78 lakh crore in the financial year 2025-26, registering a growth of 15.6 per cent over the previous year’s output of Rs 1.54 lakh crore, according to official data released on Wednesday.
The latest production value marks an increase of 110 per cent from Rs 84,643 crore recorded in 2020-21 and nearly four times the Rs 43,746 crore achieved in 2013-14, reflecting the steady growth of indigenous defence manufacturing in the country.
Defence Public Sector Undertakings (DPSUs) and other public sector units accounted for around 76 per cent of the total production, while the private sector contributed 24 per cent.
The private sector’s share, estimated at nearly Rs 42,000 crore, was the highest ever, up from 22 per cent in 2024-25.
Officials said the surge in domestic production played a key role in enabling India to achieve record defence exports worth Rs 38,424 crore during FY26.
The achievement is being viewed as a significant milestone under the Centre’s Aatmanirbhar Bharat initiative aimed at strengthening self-reliance in defence manufacturing.
Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, in a post on X, attributed the achievement to the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and praised the efforts of the Department of Defence Production, public sector enterprises and private industry.
He said the sustained rise in defence production reflects the expanding capabilities of India’s defence industrial base and expressed confidence that continued policy support, increased private sector participation and growing export opportunities would further accelerate the sector’s growth in the coming years.
