Four Killed After Jumping Off Train Over Fire Rumour, Run Over by Another Train in Madhya Pradesh
MORENA (Madhya Pradesh), June 14 (TNT): Four passengers, including three women and a child, were killed after allegedly jumping off a train following rumours of a fire onboard and being run over by another train in Madhya Pradesh’s Morena district on Sunday evening, police officials said.
According to preliminary information, the victims were travelling on the Khajuraho-Udaipur Intercity Express when panic spread among passengers following rumours that a fire had broken out in one of the coaches.
Officials said someone pulled the emergency alarm chain, causing the train to halt. In the ensuing panic, several passengers reportedly jumped off the train onto adjacent tracks.
Four of them — three women and a young boy — were struck and killed by another train passing on a parallel track.
Police and railway authorities recovered the bodies from the railway tracks and shifted them for post-mortem examination.
Railway officials said an investigation has been launched to ascertain the circumstances that led to the alarm chain being pulled and to determine how the rumour of a fire spread among passengers.
