Adivasi Leaders Urge Governor to Ensure Effective Implementation of PESA in Tribal Areas

Hyderabad, June 11 (TNT): A delegation of the National Adivasi Girijana Abhyudaya Sangham, led by its president Chanda Lingayya Dora, met Telangana Governor Shiv Pratap Shukla at Raj Bhavan here on Thursday and sought effective implementation of constitutional and legal safeguards for tribal communities in the State.

During the meeting, the delegation urged the Governor to ensure the proper implementation of the Panchayats (Extension to Scheduled Areas) Act (PESA) and Regulation 1 of 1970 in the Scheduled Areas of Telangana in accordance with the provisions of the Fifth Schedule of the Constitution.

The tribal leaders also requested that the responsibility for extraction of sand and mineral resources in tribal areas be entrusted to local tribal communities and that the revenues generated from such activities be utilised exclusively for the development of tribal regions.

They further appealed to the Governor to take special initiatives for the protection, preservation and promotion of the languages, traditions and cultural heritage of Adivasi and tribal communities.

The delegation said strengthening tribal self-governance and ensuring greater participation of local communities in the management of natural resources were essential for the socio-economic development of Scheduled Areas.
