Hyderabad, June 2 (TNT): The Telangana Prisons & Correctional Services Department on Tuesday facilitated the release of 91 life convict prisoners, who were granted special remission by the Telangana Government.

The released inmates include 85 men and six women, all found eligible under the government’s remission guidelines.

As part of efforts to ensure their successful reintegration into society, the department has extended employment and rehabilitation support to the released prisoners.

Of the total released, 38 prisoners have been provided jobs at fuel retail outlets operated by the Telangana Prisons Department, while 53 others have opted for self-employment, agriculture, family businesses and other independent occupations.

In a special initiative aimed at women’s rehabilitation and economic empowerment, four female prisoners were provided sewing machines under the Self-Employment Assistance Scheme funded through the Prison Development Fund, enabling them to pursue sustainable livelihoods after release.

Addressing at the programme, Dr. Soumya Mishra said the occasion marked not merely the release of prisoners but the beginning of a new phase of life based on responsibility, dignity and hope.

She emphasised that the correctional system believes in the transformative potential of every individual and aims not only to enforce lawful punishment but also to promote reformation and positive change.

Dr. Mishra noted that the released prisoners had earned the opportunity through good conduct, discipline and commitment to reform during incarceration.

She urged them to lead law-abiding lives, stay connected with their families and contribute positively to society.

Highlighting the department’s rehabilitation initiatives, she said Telangana prisons are being transformed into centres of correction, skill development and rehabilitation through education, vocational training, counselling and employment-oriented programmes.

She stressed that meaningful rehabilitation extends beyond prison walls and requires sustained post-release support.

The Director General expressed gratitude to A. Revanth Reddy and Shiv Pratap Shukla for their continued support towards prisoner rehabilitation and correctional reforms.

The programme was attended by senior prison officials, family members of the released prisoners, media representatives and members of the public, who extended support and encouragement to the released inmates as they begin a new chapter in their lives.
