Walkathon held in Kakinada to Mark World No Tobacco Day

Kakinada, May 31 (TNT): A walkathon was organised in Kakinada on Sunday to mark World No Tobacco Day, with participants spreading awareness about the harmful effects of tobacco consumption and the need for a healthier society.

Municipal Commissioner A.V.V. Satyanarayana flagged off the walkathon at the GRT Centre and urged people, particularly youth, to stay away from cigarettes, beedis, gutka, khaini, zarda and other tobacco products.

He warned that tobacco consumption could lead to serious health complications, including cancer, asthma and other pulmonary diseases, and called upon people to educate their family members about the dangers of smoking and tobacco use.

Speaking on the occasion, GRT General Manager M. Siva Sankar said the walkathon was organised under the organisation’s ‘Great Being’ programme, which promotes health, welfare and overall well-being in society.

He said the event was not merely a walk but an awareness campaign aimed at preventing tobacco addiction and encouraging the creation of a healthier society.

The walkathon commenced from the GRT Centre, passed through Vivekananda Park and P.R. College Road, and concluded with a public meeting at the GRT Centre.

AMB Manager Rajesh, Srinivas and noted dentist Dr Addala Satyanarayana also addressed the gathering, highlighting the health risks associated with tobacco consumption and the importance of adopting healthy lifestyles.
