Kazipet Rail Manufacturing Unit nearing Completion, to Produce 200 Intercity Trains: Ashwini

Hyderabad, May 28 (TNT) : Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw on Thursday said the Kazipet Rail Manufacturing Unit in Telangana was nearing completion and would initially manufacture around 200 intercity trains over the next five years for Indian Railways.

The Union Railway Minister said the unit was on the verge of completion and would soon begin production of modern intercity trains aimed at strengthening short-distance rail connectivity across the country.

Speaking after reviewing operational plans for the Kazipet facility in New Delhi along with Union Minister of State for Railways Ravneet Singh Bittu and senior railway officials, Vaishnaw said the Kazipet unit had been designed as a versatile railway rolling stock manufacturing facility.

According to Railway Ministry officials, the proposed intercity trains will primarily cater to short-distance travel of around 300 kilometres with frequent stops connecting towns and nearby cities.

The trains are expected to provide affordable and convenient travel options for students, office-goers, patients and daily commuters.

Officials said the trains would feature automatic door-closing systems, superior ventilation, regenerative braking systems and safer coach designs.

The 20-coach trains will also have modern jerk-free couplers, advanced bogies and a maximum operating speed of 130 kmph.

Railway officials said regenerative braking technology would enable the trains to generate electricity during braking and feed power back into the grid, improving energy efficiency and reducing carbon emissions.

The Ministry said introduction of a large fleet of such trains would significantly enhance green and clean public transport infrastructure across the country.
