Telangana: Singareni-solar-battery-storage-project-saves-Rs 26-lakh in just four-months

Hyderabad, May 21 (TNT): Singareni Collieries Company Limited on Thursday  reported encouraging results from the State’s first Battery Energy Storage System (BESS), established at its Mandamarri solar plant under the directions of the Telangana Government, with savings of nearly Rs.26 lakh achieved within four months.

The 1 MW Battery Energy Storage System was set up as an auxiliary facility to the 28 MW solar power plant in the Mandamarri area at a cost of Rs.2.5 crore.

The project was implemented following directions from Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy and Deputy Chief Minister and Energy Minister Bhatti Vikramarka Mallu to promote renewable energy utilisation and reduce wastage of surplus solar power, the Mining Company said in a release here.

The BESS enables surplus electricity generated during daytime from solar plants to be stored in batteries instead of being supplied free of cost to the grid.

The stored power can then be utilised whenever required, helping generate financial savings.

Singareni currently operates solar plants with a combined capacity of 245.5 MW across eight locations.

Of this, 147 MW has been categorised as Open Access Plants, while the remaining 98.5 MW functions as In-House Plants connected to the Telangana power grid.

According to the company, surplus electricity generated from in-house plants was earlier supplied to the grid without any financial benefit due to existing power purchase agreements.

To address this, the company experimentally established the BESS unit at Mandamarri in January this year.

Since its commissioning, the system has stored and utilised 3,35,485 surplus units of electricity for local requirements, resulting in financial savings of Rs.25.66 lakh.

Singareni management said the successful implementation of the 1 MW BESS project demonstrated the significant potential of battery storage systems in improving renewable energy utilisation and reducing wastage.

The company further stated that it was prepared to undertake more such projects in future in line with the Government’s renewable energy goals.
