Hyderabad, Feb 4(TNT) : Emphasising the importance of early diagnosis and awareness, Megastar and Padma Vibhushan awardee Dr. Chiranjeevi on Wednesday said cancer should not be viewed as a death sentence, as timely detection and proper treatment can help patients lead normal, healthy lives.
Speaking at the International Cancer Day programme organised by KIMS Hospitals in Secunderabad, he said cancer was not a curse from God but was largely linked to lifestyle factors.
He stressed the need to change public perception and remove fear associated with the disease.
Highlighting the presence of cancer survivors at the event, Dr. Chiranjeevi said their recovery reflected advancements in medical care and the dedication of doctors.
He also expressed concern over the rising incidence of cancer among children and urged parents to seek medical advice immediately if symptoms appear.
KIMS Group of Hospitals CMD Dr. B. Bhaskar Rao said fear and social stigma surrounding cancer must be overcome through education and awareness.
He noted that advanced treatments, including robotic surgeries, are now widely available in India, reducing the need for patients to seek care abroad.
Senior Consultant Surgical Oncologist and Robotic Surgeon Dr. Madhu Devarasetty said cancer, once considered a disease of older adults, is increasingly being diagnosed in children as young as five. He attributed the trend to genetic factors, environmental exposure, unhealthy lifestyles, stress, and conditions such as diabetes.
He pointed out that lack of awareness often leads patients to seek treatment at advanced stages and underlined the importance of public education.
He added that KIMS Hospitals has set up a Cancer Fight Support Group to guide patients and families through treatment and recovery.
Cancer survivors shared their experiences at the programme, reinforcing the message that cancer can be treated successfully with early diagnosis and appropriate care.
