Telangana: Two Live Red Sand Boas Seized in DRI Decoy Operation in Warangal
Warangal, May 18 (TNT) : Officials of the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) carried out an undercover decoy operation in Warangal, leading to the seizure of two live Indian Red Sand Boas and the apprehension of a suspect allegedly involved in illegal wildlife trade, the officials said in a release here on Monday.
On specific intelligence inputs indicated that a person engaged in illegal trading of live snakes was attempting to sell a live snake in the grey market in Warangal, the DRI Hyderabad Zonal Unit conducted a decoy operation on sunday.
During the operation, the suspect was identified and intercepted at the specified location. Officials searched a bag carried by the individual and recovered two live Indian Red Sand Boas (Eryx johnii).
The Indian Red Sand Boa is a reptile protected under Schedule I of the Wildlife Protection Act, 1972, making the possession and trade of the species illegal.
Following the seizure, the live snakes, packing material and the apprehended individual were handed over to the Forest Range Officer, Warangal Range, for further legal proceedings under the Wildlife Protection Act, 1972.
