Former AP High Court Judge Justice Dr G. Chandraiah Passes Away

Hyderabad, May 16 (TNT): Former Judge of the erstwhile Andhra Pradesh High Court and the first Chairman of the Telangana State Human Rights Commission, Justice Dr G. Chandraiah, passed away here early on Saturday.

He breathed his last at Apollo Hospitals, Banjara Hills, Hyderabad, while undergoing treatment for a lung-related illness.

Born in May 1954 in Timmapur village of the erstwhile Adilabad district, Justice Chandraiah created history as the first judge from the Dalit community from Telangana to be elevated to the High Court.

He is survived by his son, Prashanth, who is currently residing in the United States.

His last rites are likely to be performed on Sunday afternoon at Mahaprasthanam crematorium in Hyderabad.

After completing his postgraduate studies and law degree from Osmania University, he enrolled as an advocate in 1980.

He later served as Government Pleader before being elevated as an Additional Judge of the Andhra Pradesh High Court in 2005. Subsequently, he became a permanent judge of the High Court.

Following his retirement in 2019, he was appointed as the Chairperson of the Telangana State Human Rights Commission, where he played a significant role in championing human rights and legal protection.

Justice Chandraiah was also an honorary member of the Dr B.R. Ambedkar Memorial Trust. On December 6, 2024, he delivered the Dr B.R. Ambedkar Memorial Lecture organised by the trust.

In recognition of his contributions to law and society, Potti Sreeramulu Telugu University conferred an honorary doctorate upon him.

Several organisations, including the Dr B.R. Ambedkar Memorial Trust, Dalit Bahujan organisations, SC, ST, BC and Minority associations, and various public bodies expressed profound grief over his demise and conveyed condolences to the bereaved family.
