Chennai, May 8 (TNT): Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) chief C Joseph Vijay is likely to take oath as the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu at 11 am on Saturday at the Jawaharlal Nehru Indoor Stadium here following dramatic post-election political developments.
Tamil Nadu Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar is understood to have given his approval to Vijay to form the government after the TVK submitted letters of support from 118 MLAs, crossing the majority mark in the 234-member Assembly.
Elaborate arrangements are being made at the Nehru Indoor Stadium for the swearing-in ceremony.
Other ministers and MLAs are expected to take oath over the next few days.
TVK emerged as the single-largest party in the recently concluded Assembly elections with 108 seats, ending the decades-long bipolar political dominance of the DMK and AIADMK in the state.
However, the party initially fell short of the majority mark of 118 by 10 seats.
The effective strength of TVK is also expected to reduce to 107 as Vijay, who won from both Perambur and Tiruchirappalli (East) constituencies, will have to vacate one seat as per election rules.
The Congress, which secured five seats, extended support to TVK soon after the results.
The CPI, CPI(M) and VCK also backed the party, helping Vijay secure the numbers required for government formation.
The alliance strength currently stands as follows:
TVK – 108
Congress – 5
CPI and CPI(M) – 4
VCK – 2
With the support of alliance partners, TVK now appears set to form the next government in Tamil Nadu, marking a significant political shift in the state.
