Kolkata, Apr 289 (TNT): West Bengal has recorded its highest-ever voter turnout since Independence, with 91.66 per cent polling registered in Phase-II of the ongoing Assembly elections on Tuesday.
According to the Election Commission of India, polling began at 7:00 AM and continued peacefully across constituencies, with voter participation remaining high throughout the day.
Officials said that Phase-I of the elections had already witnessed a turnout of 93.19 per cent.
With Phase-II recording 91.66 per cent, the combined voter turnout across the two phases stands at 92.47 per cent—significantly higher than the previous record of 84.72 per cent in the 2011 Assembly elections.
Gender-wise data for Phase-II showed that female voter participation (92.28 per cent) surpassed that of male voters (91.07 per cent), while turnout among third-gender voters stood at 91.28 per cent.
The Commission noted that the figures are provisional and based on data uploaded by presiding officers through ECINET, with inputs from over 5,000 polling stations yet to be fully updated.
Final figures will include service voters and postal ballots.
Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, along with Election Commissioners S. S. Sandhu and Vivek Joshi, monitored polling through live webcasting, which was implemented across all polling stations in the phase.
The Election Commission said the high turnout reflects strong voter engagement and effective poll management across the state.
