Chennai, Apr 19 (TNT): At least 23 workers were killed and several others injured in a massive explosion at a fireworks manufacturing unit in Virudhunagar district of Tamil Nadu on Sunday, marking one of the deadliest such incidents in recent years.
Officials said many victims were charred beyond recognition, with the impact of the explosion causing severe damage and scattering debris across the area.
President of India Droupadi Murmu expressed deep grief, stating that the loss of lives in the tragic accident was distressing.
On ‘ X’, She extended condolences to the bereaved families and wished a speedy recovery to the injured.
On ‘ X’ Prime Minsiter Narendra Modi also conveyed his condolences, describing the mishap as deeply saddening and praying for the quick recovery of those injured.
Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M. K. Stalin said he had directed ministers KKSSR Ramachandran and Thangam Thennarasu to rush to the spot to oversee rescue operations and provide assistance to affected families.
He also instructed the district administration to ensure all necessary support.
Leaders across party lines, including Edappadi K. Palaniswami, Anbumani Ramadoss and K. Selvaperunthagai, condoled the deaths of the workers.
Authorities have launched rescue and relief operations, while further investigation is underway to ascertain the exact cause of the explosion.
