Diplomatic efforts Pay Off: Nine Andhra fishermen released from Bangladesh Navy Custody

Visakhapatnam, Feb 2 (TNT): Nine fishermen from Vizianagaram district, who were detained by the Bangladesh Navy, were released following sustained diplomatic efforts by the Centre and the Andhra Pradesh government.

The fishermen arrived in Visakhapatnam on Sunday and were received by local officials.

They were apprehended in October 2025 after inadvertently crossing into Bangladeshi waters while fishing.

Their prolonged detention caused deep anxiety among family members, with uncertainty prevailing for nearly three months.

The Andhra Pradesh Government promptly took up the matter with the Centre.

Fisheries Minister K. Atchannaidu forwarded complete details of the fishermen, including boat registration numbers and personal information, to the Ministry of External Affairs.

Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu and Union Civil Aviation Minister K. Rammohan Naidu also appealed to Union Home Minister Amit Shah, seeking his intervention.

After continuous diplomatic engagement with Bangladesh, the fishermen were freed and safely repatriated to India.

Expressing relief, the fishermen and their families thanked both the State and Central governments, particularly Fisheries Minister for their timely and coordinated efforts.
