Telangana CM Hails Defeat of Delimitation-Linked Bills, Calls It ‘Red-Letter Day’

Hyderabad, Apr 17 (TNT): Telangana Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy on Friday termed the defeat of delimitation-linked Constitution Amendment Bills in the Lok Sabha as a “red-letter day” in Indian history.

The Lok Sabha on Friday defeated a Constitution Amendment Bill aimed at operationalising reservation for women in legislatures and increasing the strength of the House and revise the delimitation frakework ahead of the 2029 general elections.

The Bill failed to secure the required two-thirds majority, receiving 298 votes in favour and 230 against out of 528 members present and voting, falling short of the 352 votes needed for passage.

The proposed legislation sought to increase the strength of the Lok Sabha to a maximum of 850 seats from the current 543, as part of a delimitation exercise based on the 2011 Census to implement the women’s reservation framework.

In a post on social media platform X, Revanth said the outcome was made possible under the leadership of Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi and Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge, who, he said, united democratic forces and opposition parties.

The Chief Minister thanked leaders of various parties for their support, including M K Stalin, Mamata Banerjee, Akhilesh Yadav, Sharad Pawar, Uddhav Thackeray, Lalu Prasad Yadav, Hemant Soren, Farooq Abdullah, Naveen Patnaik, and Arvind Kejriwal, among others.

He said the united stand of opposition parties helped avert what he described as a “national disaster.”
