New Delhi, Apr 5 (TNT): India’s Major Ports have handled a record 915.17 million tonnes (MT) of cargo during FY 2025–26, surpassing the annual target of 904 MT.
The cargo throughput marks a year-on-year growth of 7.06 per cent, reflecting improved efficiency, infrastructure modernisation and sustained momentum in the maritime sector.
Union Minister of Ports, Shipping and Waterways, Sarbananda Sonowal said the achievement underscores the government’s commitment to strengthening India’s maritime capabilities and enhancing logistics efficiency.
He said that under the vision of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the government is developing world-class port infrastructure and positioning India as a global maritime hub under the Maritime Amrit Kaal Vision 2047.
Among the ports, Deendayal Port Authority emerged as the top performer with 160.11 MT cargo handling, followed by Paradip Port Authority at 156.45 MT and Jawaharlal Nehru Port Authority at 102.01 MT.
Other major contributors included Visakhapatnam Port Authority, Mumbai Port Authority, Chennai Port Authority and New Mangalore Port Authority.
In terms of growth rate, Mormugao Port Authority recorded the highest increase at 15.91 per cent, followed by Kolkata Dock System at 14.28 per cent and JNPA at 10.74 per cent.
The Ministry said the growth has been driven by capacity augmentation, modernisation of infrastructure, improved multimodal connectivity, adoption of digital initiatives and increased handling of key commodities.
It added that continued policy support and investments are expected to further strengthen the sector and boost India’s position in global trade.
