BRS Urges Centre to Form Kazipet Railway Division in Telangana

Hyderabad, Apr 1 (TNT): BRS Working President K. T. Rama Rao (KTR) on Wednesday urged Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw to immediately constitute a new railway division with headquarters at Kazipet in Telangana.

In a letter, KTR said the ongoing restructuring within the South Central Railway (SCR) and operationalisation of the South Coast Railway have placed an excessive burden on the Secunderabad Division.

He noted that the Secunderabad Division currently covers around 2,755 track kilometres, which is expected to rise to about 3,150 km with new additions, significantly exceeding the optimal administrative range compared to other divisions.

KTR proposed that the new Kazipet Division should include key sections such as Kazipet–Balharshah, Peddapalli–Nizamabad, Kazipet–Yerrupalem, Dornakal–Manuguru, Motumari–Vishnupuram and Kazipet–Wangapalli, forming a network of about 1,500–2,000 track kilometres.

He also sought reconsideration of certain redistribution proposals, including retaining the Peddapalli–Nizamabad section within the proposed division instead of transferring it to Hyderabad Division.

Highlighting Kazipet’s strategic importance, he said it lies at the junction of major trunk routes and has seen significant infrastructure upgrades, including triple lines and a sanctioned quadruple line between Secunderabad and Kazipet.

The presence of a railway manufacturing unit, a Rolling Overhaul shed and locomotive maintenance facilities further strengthens the case for a separate division, he said.

KTR said the proposed division would handle freight-intensive routes, including coal, cement, fertilisers and food grains, and has strong revenue potential.

He stated that creating a Kazipet Division would decentralise operations, improve efficiency and enhance service delivery, while also boosting economic development in North and East Telangana.

He urged the Centre to approve the proposal, stating that it would strengthen the functioning of Indian Railways and meet regional aspirations.
