Telangana Govt  Alleges AP Violated Norms in Srisailam Power Generation

Hyderabad, Mar 31 (TNT): Telangana  Tourism, Culture and Excise MinisterJupally Krishna Rao on Tuesday alleged that the Andhra Pradesh government violated established norms in utilising water from the Srisailam Reservoir and undertook power generation disregarding Telangana’s interests.

Addressing a press conference at Gandhi Bhavan here, Jupally said guidelines prohibit power generation once the reservoir water level reaches the minimum drawdown level of 834 feet. He alleged that these norms were overlooked, affecting Telangana’s irrigation and drinking water needs.

The Minister expressed concern that repeated representations to the Andhra Pradesh government had not yielded results and termed its response unresponsive.

He said public representatives from the erstwhile Mahabubnagar district had called for a “Vanta-Varpu” programme at Srisailam to highlight the issue and protect the interests of people in the Krishna basin.

The Minister stated that Andhra Pradesh halted power generation only after the issue was strongly raised.

He reiterated that the Telangana government would take all necessary steps to safeguard its interests.

He also noted that similar disputes over water sharing at Srisailam had arisen in the past, including during the undivided Andhra Pradesh, and asserted that Telangana would not compromise on its rightful share of water.
