Telangana DGP urges Maoists to surrender, join mainstream; cites rise in surrenders

Hyderabad, Mar 30 (TNT):Telangana Director General of Police B. Shivadhar Reddy on Monday appealed to leaders and cadres of the CPI (Maoist) to renounce violence, lay down arms and join the democratic mainstream.

Recalling Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy’s earlier appeal, he urged Maoists to come out of the underground, reunite with their families and lead peaceful lives.

In a statement, the DGP said 721 Maoists of various ranks from Telangana and Chhattisgarh have surrendered over the past two years due to sustained efforts by the State police. These include four Central Committee members, 19 State Committee members and 36 Divisional Committee members.

He said those who surrendered were provided financial assistance and other benefits under the State government’s rehabilitation policy to help them reintegrate into society.

Shivadhar Reddy made a special appeal to Telangana natives currently active in Maoist groups in other states, including Muppalla Lakshmana Rao alias Ganapathi, Pusunuri Narahari alias Santosh, Vartha Shekhar alias Mangthu, Jode Ratnabai alias Sujatha, Nakka Susheela alias Rela and Rangaboyina Bhagya alias Rupi, to return and avail rehabilitation benefits.

He said the government would facilitate advanced medical treatment in Hyderabad for senior Maoist leader Ganapathi, who is reportedly facing health issues.

He also referred to the Chief Minister’s appeal made earlier this month following the surrender of 130 Maoists.

The DGP said cadres from other states were also showing willingness to surrender, indicating growing confidence in the rehabilitation policy.

He urged family members of those still underground to counsel them to return.

Stressing that lasting solutions can be achieved only through democratic means, he called upon Maoist cadres to give up violence and participate in the development process.
