Telangana Assembly Approves Metro Expansion, Phase I Takeover from L&T

Hyderabad, Mar 28 (TNT): Telangana Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy on Saturday moved a resolution in the Assembly on the expansion of Hyderabad Metro Rail, with the House approving the State Government’s plans and extending full support to the initiative.

The government has decided to take up the Metro Rail expansion project in view of larger public interest and demands from various sections of society, the resolution said, adding that a detailed review of the hurdles and challenges involved has been undertaken.

The existing Metro Phase I network spans 69 km. The State Government has submitted proposals to the Union Government for Phase II(A), covering 76.4 km, and Phase II(B), covering 86.1 km, while outlining the current status of the expansion.

Noting that Phase I is presently under private management, the resolution pointed to technical, legal and operational challenges in executing Phase II through a joint venture between the State and Centre.

To address concerns raised by the Centre, the Assembly approved the State Government’s decision to take over the Metro Phase I network from L&T through Hyderabad Metro Rail Limited (HMRL).

The House endorsed the decisions taken by the government regarding the takeover process and assured its full support.

It also urged the State Government to make vigorous efforts to secure expeditious approval from the Centre for the implementation of Metro Rail Phase II.
