Delimitation Row: Telangana CM Reddy Slams Proposed 50% Seat Hike

New Delhi, Mar 24 (TNT):  Telangana Chief Minister A.Revanth Reddy on Tuesday launched a sharp attack on the Centre over the proposed delimitation exercise and a reported 50 per cent increase in Lok Sabha seats, alleging it would tilt the political balance in favour of northern states and marginalise the South.

Addressing a WITT Summit 2026 organised by Tv9 at Delhi,  Reddy said any increase in parliamentary seats must reflect the existing gap between northern and southern states, warning that a blanket expansion would disproportionately benefit the Hindi heartland.

He accused the Centre of “injustice and discrimination” towards southern states and called for a united resistance against the move.

Questioning the basis of the proposed hike, he termed the 50 per cent increase a “final bullet” that could alter the federal structure.

“If seats are significantly increased in northern states, there is a possibility that governments at the Centre could be formed without the need for southern states,” he said.

The Chief Minister cautioned that such a shift would reduce the political relevance of southern states in national decision-making and limit opportunities for their leaders in central governance.

He added that even a population-based redistribution would disadvantage the South, which has performed better on population control metrics.

Reddy urged the Centre to hold consultations with all political parties before proceeding with any delimitation exercise.

He maintained that increasing constituencies in the current manner runs counter to the interests of southern states.

Alleging that the NDA government is widening the North-South divide, Reddy said he would take the issue to the people during upcoming election campaigns, positioning it as a key political plank.
