Google, SERI Hold Industry Meet in Hyderabad to Boost Mobile Repair Skilling

Hyderabad, Mar 16 (TNT): Google and Sustainable Electronics Recycling International (SERI) on Monday hosted an industry event here to accelerate electronics repair skilling in Telangana and celebrate the graduation of the first 41 trainees under the Mobile Repair Accelerator Program.

The initiative was launched last year under a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Government of Telangana to strengthen repair skills and create employment opportunities in India’s growing electronics service sector.

The event brought together key stakeholders from the government, industry leaders, skill development institutions and members of the electronics repair ecosystem.

Under the programme, 100 candidates are being trained as junior mobile repair technicians through a structured curriculum combining classroom instruction with hands-on practical training.

According to organisers, three batches have completed training so far.

Of the 28 candidates trained in the first and second batches, about 71 per cent have secured placements, while three graduates have started their own mobile repair service centres.

Graduates of the programme will have employment opportunities across the mobile service ecosystem, including roles as mobile repair technicians, technical service representatives in electronics retail outlets, sales and after-sales support staff in mobile phone stores, and entrepreneurs operating independent repair shops.

The curriculum focuses on mobile device diagnostics, component replacement, troubleshooting techniques and basic training in data-erasing software.

Participants are also trained in sustainable electronics practices and the importance of extending product life cycles through repair.

The programme is being implemented in partnership with the Telecom Sector Skill Council (TSSC), BRITCO and BRIDCO as training and certification partners, while Stellar provides specialised training on data-erasure software.

Representatives of Google said the initiative supports the growing Right-to-Repair movement in India and promotes access to repair services, spare parts and technical knowledge to extend the life of electronic devices.

SERI representatives said strong repair ecosystems are essential to achieving their “10/35 Vision”, which aims to make it common for electronics to have 10-year lifespans by 2035 with materials reused at end-of-life.

The event concluded with participants sharing success stories and a live mobile repair competition where trainees demonstrated their technical skills.
