Hyderabad, Mar 10 (TNT): Doctors at KIMS Hospitals, Kondapur here on Tuesday said that they have successfully performed a rare and highly complex laparoscopic pancreatoduodenectomy (Whipple surgery) on a patient who had earlier undergone a kidney transplant and was later diagnosed with pancreatic cancer.
According to Dr Naveen Kumar CH, Consultant Surgical Gastroenterologist at KIMS, the patient was on three immunosuppressive medications following the transplant when pancreatic cancer was detected during a follow-up examination.
The procedure was particularly challenging as the patient also suffered from polycystic liver disease, had a large cyst in the transplanted kidney and had previously undergone open bilateral nephrectomy. During the surgery, the medical team also carried out resection and repair of the Superior Mesenteric Vein (SMV), a critical blood vessel supplying the intestines and liver.
Dr. Naveen Kumar said laparoscopic vascular resections are performed only in a few specialised centres globally and pancreatic surgery in immunosuppressed patients carries a high risk.
He noted that a similar case had earlier been reported at Mayo Clinic in the United States, but it was performed using an open surgical approach.
Doctors at KIMS said the successful procedure demonstrates advances in minimally invasive surgery and highlights Hyderabad’s growing reputation as a healthcare hub capable of handling rare and high-risk medical cases.
