Hyderabad, Mar 9 (UNI): Union Minister for Coal and Mines G. Kishan Reddy on Monday urged the state government to enter into a Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) with the 3×800 MW thermal power project proposed by NTPC Limited at Ramagundam in the state as part of the second phase of the project.
In his letter addressed to Telangana Chief Minister Revanth Reddy, Kishan Reddy requested the Telangana government to also grant NTPC adequate freedom to secure coal supplies required for the full 5×800 MW (4,000 MW) project.
The Union Minister noted that, under the first phase of the Ramagundam project, two thermal power units with a capacity of 2×800 MW (1,600 MW) were built at an estimated cost of ₹12,000 crore using advanced ultra-supercritical technology.
The units were inaugurated and dedicated to the nation in 2023 by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
NTPC has since initiated steps to complete the remaining three units with a capacity of 3×800 MW (2,400 MW) in the second phase.
As in the first phase, 85 per cent of the electricity generated in the second phase will be supplied exclusively to Telangana, he said.
The Union Minister pointed out that the state recorded its highest-ever electricity demand of 18,139 MW on 3 March 2026, and demand is expected to increase further in the coming years.
Referring to a recent presentation on the power sector by Deputy Chief Minister Bhatti Vikramarka, Kishan Reddy said the state plans to increase thermal power generation by 5,000–6,000 MW to ensure grid stability in line with national goals.
The Deputy Chief Minister also reportedly stated that Telangana’s electricity demand could reach 100,000 MW by 2047.
Kishan Reddy said NTPC has extensive experience in establishing thermal power projects at low cost using advanced technology.
He also recalled that during earlier discussions in the state Assembly, the Chief Minister had appreciated the NTPC project at Ramagundam in comparison with other thermal power plants in the state.
The Union Minister stated that if NTPC is given the necessary flexibility to procure coal for the entire **5×800 MW project**, it would be able to generate quality electricity at lower cost and help meet Telangana’s growing power requirements.
He added that several southern states are already entering into PPAs with NTPC due to its ability to generate power at competitive rates using advanced technology.
Kishan Reddy urged the Chief Minister to personally intervene and ensure that the Telangana government signs a PPA with the 3×800 MW Phase-II project at Ramagundam, stating that the project would benefit both the government and the public by providing reliable and affordable electricity. ⚡
