Kavitha cemands immediate Hike of SC Reservations to 18%, Calls for Assembly Resolution

Hyderabad, Mar 2 (TNT): Telangana Jagruthi President K. Kavitha on Monday demanded that Scheduled Caste (SC) reservations in the state be increased from 15 per cent to 18 per cent in line with the revised population figures, and urged the government to pass a resolution in the ongoing Assembly Budget Session.

Addressing a meeting with leaders of various SC sub-castes at the Telangana Jagruthi office here, Kavitha said the SC population had risen to 18 per cent, as reflected in the earlier Comprehensive Family Survey and the recent Social, Economic, Political and Caste Census conducted by the present government.

Recalling the government’s earlier assurance that SC reservations would be enhanced after completion of the Census exercise and release of official data as part of SC categorisation, Kavitha said the Assembly must now move forward with a resolution to increase reservations without further delay.

She stressed that reservation benefits must effectively reach SC sub-castes and called for their extension not only in education and employment but also in the political sphere.

Reaffirming Telangana Jagruthi’s commitment to the cause, she said the organisation would stand firmly with SC sub-castes in their struggle for enhanced reservations and resolution of long-pending issues.

She also assured that efforts would be made to address difficulties faced by certain SC sub-castes in obtaining caste certificates.

Kavitha announced that Telangana Jagruthi would launch a sustained statewide movement, in coordination with Dalit organisations, to press for the enhancement of SC reservations. Representatives of 20 SC sub-castes attended the meeting.

Earlier in the day, Kavitha condemned the preventive detention of unemployed youth, alleging that the action was aimed at preventing them from obstructing the visit of Congress leader Rahul Gandhi.

She accused the Congress-led government of failing to fulfil its promise of providing two lakh jobs annually and alleged that several unemployed youth, including leaders of the Telangana Jagruthi Youth Wing, were detained on Sunday night out of fear that they might question the government.

Demanding their immediate release, she urged the government to announce a comprehensive job calendar, initiate recruitment for two lakh posts, and honour its commitments without delay.
