Khammam, Mar 1 (TNT): Telangana BJP President N. Ramchander Rao on Sunday strongly criticised the state government for demolishing homes of poor families in Velugumatla, Khammam district.
Visiting the site, Rao interacted with displaced residents whose houses were demolished despite multiple court orders to maintain “status quo.”
He accused the Revanth Reddy-led Congress government of targeting labourers and hamalis who had been living in the area since 2013–14, leaving 1,800 individuals across 600 households homeless. These families had built their homes near the Collectorate office using savings and by selling jewellery.
Rao described the demolitions as “atrocious” and condemned the bypassing of legal processes in favour of forceful action.
Rao alleged that the state government’s actions were driven by rising land values following the establishment of the Collectorate office and an upcoming highway project.
“Demolishing homes to serve real estate interests is entirely unjust. The government must rectify its mistake and construct permanent residential houses for the poor, at least under the ‘Indiramma’ scheme,” he said.
Highlighting repeated court ‘status quo’ orders that were ignored by revenue officials, Rao criticised the government for using alleged fake documents and illegal allotments as a pretext for evictions.
He called the administration’s approach “inhumane” and labelled it the “Crowbar Government.”
In response, BJP leaders organised an Annadanam (food distribution) programme at the site to provide immediate support and reassurance to the displaced families.
Rao reaffirmed the party’s commitment to stand by the poor and fight for their rights, urging the construction of permanent homes on the site.
