Central infrastructure projects worth Rs 19,184 crore commissioned in September: Brickwork Ratings

Hyderabad, Nov 3 (TNT): Central infrastructure projects worth Rs 19,184 crore were commissioned in September 2026, marking the highest monthly commissioning value during the second quarter of FY27, according to an analysis released by Brickwork Ratings.

The higher commissioning value was largely driven by the 1,320-MW Buxar Thermal Power Project, valued at Rs 13,757 crore, and the NMDC Slurry Pipeline Project Phase I, worth Rs 5,427 crore, the ratings agency said.

In comparison, four notable projects worth Rs 7,402 crore were commissioned in July, while three projects valued at Rs 3,237 crore were completed in August.

Brickwork Ratings analysed central infrastructure projects costing Rs 150 crore and above, monitored by the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation (MoSPI).

Project onboarding also witnessed a significant increase in September, with 83 new projects added, compared with 37 in August and 36 in July. Railways accounted for the largest share with 57 additions, followed by Road Transport and Highways with 16 and Power with seven.

In August, Petroleum and Natural Gas led project additions with 15, followed by Road Transport and Highways with 10. Telecommunications accounted for the highest number of additions in July with 16 projects, followed by Steel with nine.

Among the major projects onboarded in September were the Rs 7,627-crore Krishnagiri renewable energy zone transmission project and the Rs 1,839-crore Hosur-Omalur railway project.

Transport and Logistics continued to account for the largest share of estimated project costs during the quarter, at around 48-53 per cent, while Energy accounted for approximately 29-32 per cent.

Of the 1,853 projects monitored by MoSPI, 780 were mega projects involving an outlay of Rs 1,000 crore or more, while 1,073 were major projects costing less than Rs 1,000 crore.

As of September 2026, expenditure on these projects stood at Rs 17.73 lakh crore, representing 47.21 per cent of the latest estimated project cost.

The analysis also showed that 654 projects, or around 35 per cent, had achieved more than 80 per cent physical progress, while 338 projects, or about 18 per cent, had crossed 80 per cent financial progress.

Brickwork Ratings Chief Ratings Officer K H Patnaik said commissioning of infrastructure assets could facilitate the transition from construction to revenue-generating operations. However, the pace of cash flow generation would depend on utilisation, tariff and offtake arrangements, operating costs and financing structures.

He said credit-rating assessments would focus on the ability of projects to generate predictable cash flows sufficient to meet debt-servicing obligations. Rating upgrades would be possible where projects generated cash flows in line with estimates.
