Telangana Police women Safety launches gender sensitisation programme at Hyderabad University

Hyderabad, Oct 26 (TNT): The Telangana Police Women Safety Wing on Monday launched a two-day training programme at the University of Hyderabad (UoH)to sensitise participants on gender equality and encourage men and boys to actively intervene against harassment, discrimination and gender-based violence.

The Training of Trainers (ToT) programme, organised under the #StandWithHer campaign in collaboration with the Rubaroo team and the university’s Centre for Women’s Studies, was inaugurated by Charu Sinha, Director General (CID, ACB and WSW), at the School of Social Sciences.

The programme will conclude on October 27.

Addressing the gathering, Sinha said the campaign, launched in March this year as a year-long initiative, aimed to transform passive bystanders into active upstanders who challenge inappropriate behaviour and gender-based violence.

“When we keep quiet, we are equally complicit,” she said, urging participants to question patriarchal attitudes, challenge online abuse and promote respect, empathy and equality.

She said the limited response to a reporting mechanism introduced under the Women Safety Wing’s Safe Mobility Initiative had prompted a deeper examination of how society normalised misbehaviour, leading to the conceptualisation of the campaign.

The programme adopts an interactive approach involving discussions, experiential learning and reflection on everyday experiences.

The Training of Trainers model is intended to equip participants to take the campaign’s message to their respective communities and institutions.

University of Hyderabad Vice-Chancellor J. Anuradha, Registrar Devesh Nigam, Dean of the School of Social Sciences K. Suneetha Rani, Head of the Centre for Women’s Studies Deepa Srinivas and Women Safety Wing’s Head of Training and Content Development Asiya Shervani attended the inaugural session.

Suneetha Rani stressed the need to address gender inequality within households and promote shared responsibility in everyday relationships.

“If we are trying to democratise every space around us, why not democratise home, and why are we taking it for granted?” she asked.

The Women Safety Wing aims to build a network of trained individuals to challenge harmful social norms and promote women’s safety, dignity and equality as a collective responsibility.
