Kakinada, Feb 25 (TNT): Former MP G.V. Harsha Kumar on Wednesday alleged that the Andhra Pradesh government had failed to take action against officials responsible for alleged milk adulteration that reportedly led to five deaths in Rajahmundry.
Speaking to media persons here, Harsha Kumar said food safety officials were required to inspect milk centres once every three months, but such inspections had not been conducted regularly for years.
He alleged that the Food Safety Department was citing staff shortage and lack of recruitment, particularly after the bifurcation of the erstwhile East Godavari district, to avoid responsibility.
He claimed that officials were limited to collecting samples and sending them to laboratories in Hyderabad and registering cases, which often resulted only in penalties imposed by courts.
Harsha Kumar criticised the coalition government for not suspending the officials concerned so far and held Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu responsible for the situation.
He also demanded a Special Investigation Team probe into certain recent suspicious deaths, stating that an impartial inquiry was necessary.
