AP: DRI seizes foreign-origin gold worth Rs 8.98-Cr in Visakhapatnam, two arrested

Visakhapatnam (Andhra Pradesh), Oct 11 (TNT): The Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) has seized 5.83 kg of foreign-origin gold valued at Rs 8.98 crore from a car travelling from Kolkata to Hyderabad and arrested two persons in connection with the smuggling, officials said on Sunday.

Acting on specific intelligence, DRI officials maintained heightened surveillance along the National Highway and intercepted the vehicle after a prolonged chase on the night of October 8-9.

During a detailed search of the vehicle, officials detected a specially fabricated cavity beneath the leg space of the front passenger seat.

Three packets containing 5,832.90 grams of 24-carat gold of 999 purity were recovered from the concealed compartment, the DRI said in a release.

According to the DRI, the gold had been smuggled into India through the India-Bangladesh border and was being transported to Hyderabad.

The recovered gold was seized under the provisions of the Customs Act, 1962. Both occupants of the vehicle were arrested and produced before the jurisdictional magistrate, who remanded them to judicial custody.

Further investigation is in progress.
