Telangana draws up action plan to curb road accidents, fatalities

Hyderabad, Oct 7 (TNT): Telangana Police and the Transport Department have drawn up district-specific road safety action plans to reduce road accidents and fatalities, with 48 critical accident corridors and 230 high-risk locations identified across seven districts.

Director-General of Police C V Anand and Transport Commissioner Ilambarithi reviewed the proposed interventions during a video conference with officials of the seven districts here on Wednesday.

The plans cover Medchal-Malkajgiri, Rangareddy, Yadadri-Bhuvanagiri, Sangareddy, Hanamkonda, Warangal and Jangaon districts, identified among the high-risk districts in the country.

The plans, prepared by the SaveLife Foundation based on e-DAR data for 2024 and 2025, have identified 48 critical accident corridors, 230 Priority-1 locations where four or more fatalities were recorded, 220 traffic violation locations and 183 critical pedestrian accident spots.

Sangareddy accounted for the highest number of critical corridors at 14, while Rangareddy had 98 Priority-1 accident locations, 99 traffic violation locations and 66 pedestrian accident-prone spots.

Anand directed officials to analyse accident data, road conditions, engineering deficiencies and other factors contributing to crashes and formulate corrective measures with the objective of achieving zero fatalities at identified locations.

He called for comprehensive accident data, including causes of crashes and their timing, to be recorded on the Margadarshak portal and dashboard to facilitate systematic analysis and targeted interventions.

The road safety strategy will follow the ‘4E’ approach of Education, Engineering, Enforcement and Emergency Support, focusing on road-user awareness, correction of infrastructure deficiencies, enforcement of traffic rules and prompt medical assistance to accident victims.

Transport Commissioner Ilambarithi directed officials to ensure that every road accident was recorded on the Electronic Detailed Accident Report (e-DAR) platform.

Accident and injury details, along with geo-tagged photographs of accident locations, should also be uploaded on the Margadarshak portal.

Anand said the government was taking steps to establish a Road and Rail Safety Management Bureau under the Police Department to strengthen safety measures.

He said more than 1.75 lakh people die in road accidents annually in the country, while Telangana records more than 7,000 road accident fatalities every year and ranks seventh in the country in road accident deaths.

The State’s road safety initiatives and the action plan will be presented by the Chief Secretary and DGP at a meeting scheduled in Chennai on November 3.

Representatives of the SaveLife Foundation, Collectors of the seven districts, Police Commissioners of four commissionerates and other officials participated in the video conference.
