Hyderabad, Oct 2 (TNT) : Telangana Deputy Chief Minister Mallu Bhatti Vikramarka on Friday said infrastructure projects worth Rs 52,000 crore were under way in Hyderabad as part of the state government’s efforts to meet the needs of the city’s growing population.

Speaking at the launch of the TSRTC–Metro Rail Common Pass at Praja Bhavan here, he said the projects covered roads, flyovers, bridges, underpasses, drinking water supply and other civic infrastructure.

Works worth Rs 35,000 crore were being taken up within the HMDA limits, while projects undertaken by GHMC, Hyderabad Water Works and other agencies took the total value of ongoing works to Rs 52,000 crore, he said.

Bhatti said the government was focusing on implementing projects and delivering results.

He credited previous Congress governments with bringing Krishna, Godavari and Manjeera water to Hyderabad and alleged that no additional drinking water had been brought to the city during the previous government’s 10-year tenure after the formation of Telangana.

He also cited the Outer Ring Road, the international airport and institutions such as the University of Hyderabad, IIIT, BHEL, ECIL, DRDO, BDL, MIDHANI and IDPL as major developments established during earlier Congress governments.

The 362-km Regional Ring Road, estimated to cost Rs 30,627 crore, was being developed to extend Hyderabad’s growth beyond the city, while 21 radial roads were planned to connect the Outer Ring Road and Regional Ring Road. Alignment approvals had been granted for 10 roads, and work had begun on two, he added.

Bhatti said Phase I of the Musi river rejuvenation project had commenced, with the government aiming to clean and restore the river and improve the city’s environmental conditions.

To reduce air pollution, 550 electric buses had been introduced in Hyderabad, with another 2,200 planned. The government had also sanctioned Rs 200 crore to support the conversion of diesel auto-rickshaws into electric vehicles, he said.

The government was developing Bharat Future City across 30,000 acres to attract investments, industries and employment opportunities and transform Hyderabad into an international-standard city, he added.
