Andhra Pradesh’s commercial tax collections rise 18% to Rs 30,436 crore in H1
Vijayawada, Oct 1 (TNT): Andhra Pradesh’s commercial tax collections rose 18 per cent year-on-year to Rs 30,435.98 crore during April-September of the financial year 2026-27, supported by higher GST receipts, petroleum VAT collections and technology-driven tax compliance measures, according to the state Commercial Taxes Department.
The state generated additional revenue of Rs 4,543.06 crore during the first half of the financial year compared with the corresponding period last year, marking its highest-ever half-yearly commercial tax collection, the department said in a release on Thursday.
September collections also touched a record Rs 4,986.18 crore, up 15.03 per cent from Rs 4,334.84 crore a year earlier, translating into an additional Rs 651.34 crore in revenue.
Net GST collections, a key indicator of consumption-related tax receipts, increased 14.10 per cent year-on-year to Rs 3,182.87 crore in September.
Cumulative net GST revenue rose 18 per cent to Rs 19,635.49 crore during April-September, compared with Rs 16,760.21 crore in the year-ago period.
The state received an IGST settlement of Rs 1,927.62 crore in September, an increase of 20.12 per cent over the corresponding month last year.
The department attributed the rise partly to increased inter-state transactions linked to infrastructure development and economic activity.
Petroleum VAT collections grew 20.77 per cent to Rs 1,666.91 crore in September, while professional tax receipts increased 3.99 per cent to Rs 43.53 crore.
VAT collections from liquor rose to Rs 86 crore from Rs 83 crore a year earlier.
Andhra Pradesh’s September net GST growth of 14.10 per cent exceeded the national average of 8 per cent, according to the department, which cited the GST Network’s monthly report.
The state’s growth was marginally higher than Karnataka and Telangana, both of which recorded 14 per cent growth.
The department identified electric machinery, machinery and equipment, iron and steel, and plastics among the leading commodity segments contributing to revenue growth.
Financial services, support services, professional and technical services, and real estate services were the major contributors among service categories.
The revenue performance comes amid ongoing infrastructure activity in the state, including the development of Amaravati, ports, highways and industrial corridors.
Such projects generate demand for construction materials, machinery, capital goods and related services, contributing to economic transactions and tax collections, the department said.
The Commercial Taxes Department has also expanded its use of artificial intelligence and data analytics to identify high-risk taxpayers, scrutinise tax returns, detect discrepancies in input tax credit claims and prevent fraudulent registrations.
Other measures include UPI-based analytics, Aadhaar-linked verification and data sharing with other government departments.
The department said these technology-led enforcement measures had strengthened compliance and helped identify potential revenue leakages. Several states have reportedly approached Andhra Pradesh to study its AI-based tax administration systems.
Chief Commissioner of State Tax A Babu said the department would continue to focus on technology integration, enforcement and improved taxpayer compliance to sustain revenue growth during the current financial year.
