Telangana: FIR registered over alleged killing of community dogs in Siddipet
Siddipet (Telangana), Sept 30 (TNT): Koheda police have registered a case over the alleged killing of community dogs in Baswapur village of Siddipet district, following complaints by People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) India and Stray Animal Foundation India (SAFI).
According to the complaint filed by Adulapuram Goutam, Cruelty Prevention Manager at SAFI, the village sarpanch allegedly hired workers to inject community dogs with a lethal substance on the night of September 20, resulting in their deaths.
The case has been registered under Section 325 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023, and Section 11(1) of the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, 1960, PETA said in a release on Wednesday.
As part of the investigation, the remains of three dogs were exhumed from a burial site in Muthannapet village and sent for post-mortem examination.
The total number of dogs allegedly killed has not yet been established.
In a release, Saloni Sakaria, Associate Manager of Cruelty Response at PETA India, said community dog populations should be managed through sterilisation programmes rather than the killing of animals.
She said such killings were unlawful and ineffective in controlling dog populations.
PETA India cited Rule 11(19) of the Animal Birth Control Rules, 2023, which provides for the release of sterilised community dogs in the same locality from which they were captured.
The organisation also referred to a Supreme Court judgment dated May 19, 2026, which it said reiterated the requirement to return dogs to their territories after the prescribed procedures.
PETA India and SAFI have called for action against those responsible. Police said the investigation was continuing.
