Telangana CM Revanth seeks Bharat Ratna for Manmohan Singh, calls for knowledge centre in Delhi
Hyderabad, Sept 26 (TNT): Telangana Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy on Saturday urged the Centre to confer the Bharat Ratna on former Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh and establish a knowledge centre in his memory in New Delhi, citing his contributions to Telangana’s formation and India’s economic development.
Addressing after unveiling a statue of Manmohan Singh at Wipro Circle, financial District, here, the Chief Minsiter directed Congress MPs to raise the Bharat Ratna demand in Parliament.
Criticising the Centre for not taking steps to establish a memorial for the former Prime Minister in Delhi, Revanth said decisions to honour national leaders should rise above political considerations.
Recalling Singh’s role in the formation of Telangana, he said the former Prime Minister and Congress leader Sonia Gandhi had helped fulfil the decades-long aspiration of the people for a separate state.
He also highlighted Singh’s contributions as an economist, RBI Governor, Finance Minister and Prime Minister, particularly the economic reforms introduced in 1991 under the P.V. Narasimha Rao government.
He further referred to legislation enacted during Singh’s tenure, including the Right to Education Act, the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act and the Land Acquisition, Rehabilitation and Resettlement Act, 2013.
The Chief Minister said the statue was intended to preserve Singh’s legacy and inspire future generations.
