Telangana Congress seeks safeguards against voter deletions during SIR
Hyderabad, Sept 26 (TNT): The Telangana Pradesh Congress Committee (TPCC) on Saturday urged the Election Commission of India (ECI) not to delete eligible voters from electoral rolls solely for failing to attend hearings during the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) and sought greater transparency in the exercise.
Addressing a press conference at Gandhi Bhavan here, TPCC spokesperson Syed Nizamuddin said around 73.39 lakh electors had been excluded from the draft rolls in Telangana, while nearly 47 lakh noticees had not attended hearings.
He also said 7.41 lakh notices remained unserved.
The Congress demanded disclosure of the discrepancies cited in notices, daily updates on Form-6 applications, recognition of the Telangana government’s family certificate as a valid supporting document and an independent audit of the electoral-roll software.
Nizamuddin said Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy would raise the issue at the Congress Working Committee meeting in New Delhi on September 29.
The party would decide on a statewide protest programme after the meeting, he added.
He urged the ECI to publish details of additions, deletions, restorations and pending cases before finalising the electoral rolls, stressing that eligible voters should not lose their voting rights due to procedural issues or missed hearings.
