Tirupati: SVIMS performs complex scoliosis surgery under TTD Pranadanam scheme
Tirupati, Sept 17 (TNT): Sri Venkateswara Institute of Medical Sciences (SVIMS) on Thursday said it has successfully performed complex corrective spinal surgery on a 25-year-old patient suffering from Idiopathic Dorsal Scoliosis under the Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams (TTD) Sri Venkateswara Pranadanam High-End Therapy Scheme.
In a release, SVIMS Director and Vice-Chancellor Dr Gudaru Jagadish said the Department of Neurosurgery had performed 5,356 free surgeries under the Pranadanam and High-End Therapy schemes between 2001 and 2026.
Of these, 5,194 surgeries were performed under the Pranadanam Scheme from 2001 to 2026, while 162 high-end procedures were carried out between 2023 and 2026, he said.
The department has also performed more than 200 surgeries for Idiopathic Dorsal Scoliosis and related spinal deformities.
The latest surgery was performed by a team led by Neurosurgery Department head Dr V V Ramesh Chandra, along with Prof B C M Prasad, Dr V Prasanna Kumar, Dr M Mahesh and Dr M Bhanu Prakash Reddy.
The patient, M Tirumaleswara Reddy, 25, of Madhavapalli in Komarolu mandal of Prakasam district, was admitted to SVIMS on August 22.
After detailed evaluation, he underwent the corrective spinal procedure on September 9 and recovered satisfactorily before being discharged.
Dr Jagadish stressed the importance of early detection of spinal deformities and timely treatment.
He advised parents to watch for signs including abnormal curvature of the spine, uneven shoulders, waist asymmetry, altered posture and the body leaning to one side.
He said treatment would depend on the patient’s age, degree of curvature, skeletal growth and overall health, with severe or progressive cases potentially requiring corrective surgery.
Dr Jagadish said financial difficulties should not prevent poor patients from accessing advanced medical treatment and reiterated SVIMS’ commitment to providing specialised healthcare through government and humanitarian schemes.
The patient expressed gratitude to TTD and SVIMS, stating that financial assistance of nearly ₹5 lakh enabled him to undergo the advanced surgery free of cost.
